Celebrating and Honoring Pride Month: Learn, Support, and Advocate for Homeownership
June is a month of celebration for two important occasions: National Homeownership Month and LGBTQ+ Pride Month.
REALTORS® provide a vital link between inclusivity, homeownership, and the American Dream. They know firsthand the significance of these milestones in their clients’ lives.
Promoting Equality and Fair Housing: More than a decade ago, even before the Equality Act gained congressional approval, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) understood the importance of safeguarding individuals’ rights under the Fair Housing Act. In 2009, NAR took significant steps to extend these protections by amending its Code of Ethics to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. NAR became a powerful advocate for equality in the housing market, promoting fairness and inclusivity for all.
Empowering Homeowners through Education: NAR’s role is pivotal in promoting homeownership and educating consumers. Visit www.HomeOwnershipMatters.realtor, where current and prospective homeowners can voice their concerns on critical tax and property issues at the local, state, and national levels of government. Together with dedicated REALTORS®, we strive to protect homeownership, ensuring its accessibility for future generations. In the face of evolving policy changes, our collective efforts to defend homeowner rights are more important than ever.
Learning and Supporting: Delve deeper into homeownership and LGBTQ+ advocacy, by exploring the National Homeownership Month page on the Home Ownership Matters website. Discover engaging resources throughout June, including shareable videos, infographics, and insightful content. By immersing yourself in these materials, you will gain a deeper understanding of the significance of homeownership and the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community.
Engaging with the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance: Another remarkable organization that deserves your attention is the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance. As a 501(c)6 non-profit member organization, they are wholly dedicated to empowering the LGBTQ+ community on their journey towards homeownership. With chapters across North America, the Alliance fosters inclusivity, providing unwavering support as advocates for LGBTQ+ rights in real estate and housing policy. By joining forces with this organization, you can contribute to addressing the distinct housing needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and actively work towards building a more inclusive society.
Becoming an Ally: Take part in the transformative journey of becoming an ally by participating in the Ally Certification program offered by the Ventura County Coastal Association of REALTORS® (VCCAR). By the end of June, their staff will be 100% Ally Certified, and they challenge others to follow suit. This enlightening and interactive course equips participants with the knowledge and skills to effectively engage with LGBTQ+ home buyers and sellers. Straight Allies, in particular, are encouraged to enroll, as it sheds light on the discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ clients and helps build cultural competency. Embark on this empowering journey today by signing up at www.realestatealliance.org/education.
Together, We Create a Brighter Future: As we celebrate National Homeownership and LGBTQ+ Pride Month, let us remember the significance of homeownership and the ongoing struggle for equality and inclusivity. By educating ourselves, supporting organizations like the LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance, and becoming allies, we actively contribute to a society where homeownership is accessible to all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and pave the way for a brighter future for everyone.
